With AI, users are taking control over how content is served to them: summarize, translate, analyze, personalize - whatever they ask, AI can do. User-friendliness is at its peak but the oversimplistic UI design of a chatbot, popularized by ChatGPT and similar tools, is not a fit for product knowledge. At some point, unleashed AI can compromise the accuracy, reliability, and ultimately the usability of technical documentation, hence introducing risks and liability for the company.
As content professionals, we cannot deprive nor stop users from leveraging AI on our documentation. The new frontier is to harness AI to give users the experience they seek while ensuring the pertinence, practicality, and trustworthiness of the information that is delivered to them. This means reinventing the user interface for the AI age.
