At Philips, we increase the awareness of the importance of inclusive language and terminology in the workplace and beyond. One integral part of our strategy is consistent terminology work. By identifying and managing non-inclusive terms, we continuously support content creators, translators, and all other terminology database users in adopting and using inclusive language. But inclusive language is not only about terms and phrases that should not be used. It is so much more. It is a flexible framework for using language that appropriately addresses all audiences. Therefore, our content creators are also using an integrated authoring support tool that not only checks their content for correct terminology. It also consistently helps create inclusive content at scale, by guiding writers to make informed language choices as they create content. Come and join us and discover where we are in our journey and what is ahead of us.

Takeaways

In this presentation, we share with our audience how we, at Philips, approach the topic of inclusive language. Our priority is to raise the awareness of the importance of inclusive terminology and communication in the workplace and beyond. From our experience, inclusive language is not only about terms and phrases that should not be used. Inclusive language is so much more. But how can we all become better in communicating inclusively? We show, for example, how we use the power of technology to help content creators to use more inclusive language and terminology. This is a collaborative task. And we believe that it is up to everybody to act and to speak up. So, we also invite our audience to raise questions, to discuss this important topic, and to share their perspectives.

Biography

Bernd has 25+ years experience in different roles in the field of documentation. Since 2019, he manages a translation and translation validation team in Philips Healthcare. One of the goals is to break down the silos of content creation and localization, addressing improvement opportunities as early as possible in the process.

Biography

Daniela worked as a translation validator in the Philips Healthcare Localization Department 2003-2010. Since 2010, she has been responsible for the establishment and implementation of terminology management processes and its integration into existing Philips localization infrastructures. To this end, she is identifying key performance indicators (KPIs) and pushes the boundaries of active content governance to enable a consistent, scalable, reproducible, and machine measurable content quality – which is seen as one of the key ingredients for a great customer experience – her ultimate goal.
