Career success often means fitting into the economic context, or “economy,” of a particular time. Such “fitting” often involves understanding and addressing the societal, technical, or other dynamics shaping the economic development of a period. (For example, we’ve seen discussions of the “attention economy” or the “AI economy.”) For technical communicators, this fitting involves advocating what they do in terms of the connections between psychology, usability, and marketability within the modern marketplace. Essentially, career success involves understanding and embracing today’s “usability economy” and the central role technical communicators can play in it. This presentation will examine the dynamics of this new economy and discuss how technical communicators can position themselves for success in it.
